Written in Stone

When we say something is written in stone we are speaking of its having the quality of permanence. Do you know there is one part of the Bible that was originally written in stone by God Himself – in His own handwriting?! And when that small section of the Bible was destroyed by none other than Moses himself, God re-wrote it and again wrote it in stone?
“And He (God) gave unto Moses, when He had made an end of communing with him upon Mount Sinai, two tables of testimony, tables of stone, written with the finger of God” (Exodus 31:18). Note: All comments, single words or phrases, placed in parentheses are the comments of the author of this study.
“And the tables were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, graven upon the tables” (Exodus 32:16).
These stone tablets were smashed to pieces by Moses a short time later, as “it came to pass he came nigh unto the camp, that he saw the calf (the golden idol Aaron had made), and the dancing; and Moses’ anger waxed hot, and he cast the tables out of his hands, and broke them beneath the mount” (Exodus 32:19).
“And the Lord said unto Moses, ‘Hew thee two tables of stone like unto the first: and I will write upon these tables the words that were in the first tables, which you broke.’” (Exodus 34:1).
And just what was written on those two stone tablets? “And He wrote upon the tables the words of the covenant, THE TEN COMMANDMENTS” (See Exodus 34:28).
Notice that after smashing the first two tablets, Moses was ordered by God to carve out two replacement tablets, yet still God Himself re-wrote the Ten Commandments with His own finger!
There is one other interesting and very revealing circumstance involved in the giving of the Ten Commandments: “And the Lord spoke unto you out of the midst of the fire: you heard the voice of the words, but saw no similitude (no shape, no physical manifestation), only you heard a voice. And He declared unto you His covenant, which He commanded you to perform, even Ten Commandments; and He wrote them upon two tables of stone” (Deuteronomy 4:12-13). Notice, too, God commanded His people to perform, to keep, to OBEY these commandments! They were NOT given merely to show them what God identified as sin. God fully expected them to KEEP His commandments.
The entire nation of Israel stood transfixed as the voice of their Creator God boomed from Mount Sinai the Ten Commandments one after another. But a voice becomes only a memory when no more is spoken. So God, with His own finger, wrote the Ten Commandments on one of the few substances that will last through the ages – solid stone!
At the same time God gave the Israelites the Ten Commandments, He also had them construct a receptacle in which to place the sacred tablets – the ark of the covenant, also known as the ark of the testimony. This was then placed in the most holy place in the tabernacle, the holiest of holies. (See Exodus 30:1-6; Exodus 26:33-34). God then decreed “over the testimony (the Ten Commandments)…I will meet with you” (See Exodus 30:6). “Do you want to talk? Let’s talk with me hovering over these Ten Commandments.” What point do you think God was trying to make? What point was He trying to make when He wrote the Ten Commandments in stone with His very own finger? What point was He trying to make when THE ONLY TIME Israel heard God’s voice was when He thundered the Ten Commandments from Mount Sinai?
Moses wrote, “these words (the Ten Commandments) the Lord spoke unto ALL your assembly in the mount out of the midst of fire, of the cloud, and of the thick darkness, WITH A GREAT VOICE; and He added no more. And He wrote them in two tables of stone, and delivered them unto me” (See Deuteronomy 5:6-22).
Again Moses wrote, “Know therefore that the Lord thy God, He is God, the faithful God, which keeps covenant and mercy with them that love Him and keep his commandments TO A THOUSAND GENERATIONS” (Deuteronomy 7:9). Less than a hundred generations have passed since Moses wrote those words!
Among Moses’ very last words was this statement: “From His (God’s) right hand went a fiery law for them. Yea, He loved the people” (See Deuteronomy 33:2-3) You might say the Ten Commandments were God’s love offering to mankind.
In the 78th Psalm, we read these words: “For He (God) established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which He commanded our fathers that they should make them known to their children (their descendants) that the generation to come might know them, even the children which should be born, who should arise and declare them to their children: that they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep His commandments, and might not be as their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation that set not their heart aright, and whose spirit was not steadfast with God” (verses 5 through 8).
Again the Psalmist writes, “But the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear (reverence) Him, and His righteousness unto children’s children, to such as keep His covenant, and to those that remember His commandments to do them” (Psalm 103:17-18).
From everlasting to everlasting goes well beyond a thousand generations, doesn’t it? Although a thousand generations alone would extend many thousands of years into the future, and scripture plainly says God fully expects the Ten Commandments to be kept “to a thousand generations!” (See Deuteronomy 7:9 again).
“ALL His commandments are sure. They stand fast for ever and ever” (See Psalm 111:7-8). The Hebrew word for “sure” in that verse is aman (pronounced aw-MAN’), and means “firm, PERMANENT!” Notice, God’s inspired Word says ALL His commandments ARE PERMANENT!!! This would include the fourth commandment, “Remember the sabbath day to keep it holy.” (See Exodus 20:8-11). And the context of that 111th Psalm shows clearly the Ten Commandments are spoken of here.
And David writes, “All your commandments are truth. Concerning your testimonies, I have known of old that you have founded them FOR EVER”(See Psalm 119:151=152). David knew that because David had read and often meditated upon God’s Word, the books of Moses, the first five books of the Bible commonly known as the Pentateuch.
“Thus says the Lord, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel (the One mankind would come to know as Jesus Christ – the only descendant of Israel who was truly holy through and through, our Redeemer), ‘I am the Lord your God which teaches you to profit, which leads you by the way that you should go. O that you had hearkened to my commandments! Then had your peace been as a river (continuously flowing), and your righteousness as the waves of the sea (continuously thundering upon the shore)’” (Isaiah 48:17-18). God, through His Holy Spirit, will always lead His faithful children of all ages, to a thousand generations, to keep the Ten Commandments – ALL of them!
All Christians have heard and probably often used the Bible term “righteousness.” But just what IS righteousness? David, in the 119th Psalm answers that question: “All your commandments are righteousness” (verse 172). And through Isaiah the prophet, God declares, “My righteousness (God’s commandments) shall not be abolished” (See Isaiah 51:6). God then urges, “Hearken unto me, you that know righteousness (those who know and KEEP God’s commandments), the people in whose heart  is my law, fear ye not the reproach of men, neither be ye afraid of their reviling….my righteousness shall be forever” (see verses 7 and 8). God knew His faithful commandment-keeping sons and daughters would be reviled and scorned by deceived religious types who would insist that Jesus Christ abolished the Ten Commandments when He died on the cross.
But didn’t the apostle Paul write, “you are not under the law, but under grace?” (See Romans 6:14). Yes, he did, but if one will only look at the context in Romans 6, where Paul makes that statement, he will see that Paul is merely saying obedient believers are not under THE PENALTY of the law, but that God has graciously extended mercy to us due to our repentance and belief and acceptance of Jesus’ sacrifice on our behalf! Paul then goes on to say, “Know ye not, brethren, for I speak to them that know the law, how that the law has dominion over a man as long as he lives!” (See Romans 7:1). And it is clear that it is the Ten Commandments Paul refers to in this text as the next few verses expound upon the seventh commandment, “Thou shalt not commit adultery!” Paul says as long as we live we are obligated to keep God’s Ten Commandments! Only a fool would think Calvary frees a believer to ignore or break God’s holy commandments, that we are now free to lie, steal, commit adultery, kill, etc. Paul then writes, “Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good” (verse 12). Why would God do away with a holy, just and good law that He wrote with His own finger on stone and clearly stated would be in force and effect for a thousand generations, indeed, forever and ever??!!!
Notice how Paul exhorts the believers at Ephesus to KEEP the Ten Commandments: “Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbor,” that is keep the ninth commandment! (See Ephesians 4:25). Again, “Let him that stole STEAL NO MORE…” that is keep the eighth commandment! (See verse 28, same chapter). Again, “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth…” that is keep the third commandment against taking God’s name in vain and the ninth commandment forbidding bearing false witness! (See verse 29, same chapter). Just because Paul doesn’t expound further and exhort the believers at Ephesus not to kill anyone, or worship idols, or desecrate God’s holy Sabbath doesn’t mean he believed these commandments had been done away with. How absurd to even think so!! Remember, the early church had no New Testament, no Greek scriptures. The last words of what would eventually become the New Testament would not even be penned until near the close of the First Century. An apostle’s “Bible,” the Bible of the early church was what would much later be called the Old Testament – that is, the Hebrew scriptures. For twenty years and more the early church had only the Hebrew scriptures, the Old Testament, to guide them in formulating their beliefs. Other than that guide the apostles had only the words spoken by Jesus Christ during His earthly ministry to instruct the early church in God’s way. Of course, some members of the early church were present in Galilee and Judea and personally heard the teachings and instruction of Jesus Christ.
Imagine for a moment one of those members, who is present at a meeting of believers in Jerusalem or Capernaum, is asked to share with the congregated followers of the Lord. The year is 36 A.D. Not one word of the New Testament has yet been penned. This eighty year old gentleman was present several years before when on a small mountain near the Sea of Galilee Jesus sat down and began to teach His disciples, saying, “Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets. I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill…” (See Matthew 5:17). All grow silent as this dedicated follower of the Lord says, “Jesus said quite clearly and fervently, ‘Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men they have been abolished shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven, but whosoever shall keep them and teach others to do the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven!’” (See Matthew 5:19). A voice in the back of the assembly calls out, “Of which commandments did the Lord speak when He said that, brother?” The old gentleman replies, “He was speaking of the Ten Commandments, as He went on to quote two of them word-for-word, ‘Thou shalt not kill’ and ‘Thou shalt not commit adultery!’” (See verses 21 and 27, Matthew 5).
To the hypocritical Pharisees, Jesus Christ warned, “This people honors me with their lips (in their hymns, sermons and testimonies), but their heart is far from me. (Howso?) Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men, for laying aside the commandment of God (the Fifth Commandment), ye hold the tradition of men….Full well ye reject the commandment of God that ye may keep your own tradition, for Moses said ‘Honor thy father and thy mother…’ but ye suffer (a man) no more to do ought for his father or his mother, making the word of God of none effect through your tradition which ye have delivered (to the people)” (See Mark 7:6 through 13).
Today, and for many centuries past, Satan has deceived professing Christians to lay aside the Fourth Commandment, “Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy,” replacing the same with a common day – Sunday, the day long honored by pagans in their worship of the sun. (Or didn’t you know that is WHY it is called “sun”day?!! Christianity doesn’t even have the foggiest idea of how clever and deceitful and intelligent Satan really is. He fooled the super-religious Pharisees into rejecting the Fifth Commandment and he has fooled multitudes, yes, millions of professing Christians into rejecting the Fourth Commandment while they continue to honor Jesus Christ with their lips though their heart is far from Him in such glaring disobedience. Give the devil his due, friend. He IS a master at his craft.
And you better believe Satan has a passage here and a passage there that he twists and distorts so that these deceived believers “honestly” think they have scripture authority for trampling on God’s eternal HOLY Sabbath and calling the day of the sun sacred. They will quickly turn to the Book of Acts, or Colossians, or Galatians, or Romans and thump their Bibles saying, “It says right here blah, blah, blah…” And their understanding of the texts they cite is as clouded as their judgment. Acts 20 does NOT say believers came together each and every Sunday, observing that period of time as a holy day, God’s “new” Sabbath. Paul had told them that he was departing the area never to return (verse 25). It took them until the first day of the week to assemble themselves together to hear him one last time. Had it been Tuesday or Wednesday before they could so assemble themselves, would that have made Tuesday or Wednesday God’s “new” Sabbath? Of course not! And if “preachers” would carefully examine with an open mind and unprejudiced heart each and every other text they THINK validates Sunday observance as God’s new “holy” day, they would quickly see how clever Satan is in his efforts to confuse and blind those who desire to follow Jesus Christ in an obedient walk. But, since they don’t have the spiritual insight, judgment or wisdom to see that the Good Friday-Easter Sunday TRADITION portrays Jesus Christ as a phony Messiah, they are equally unable to see what God is actually saying in these other sacred texts of scripture. They are utterly blind to the fact that Jesus Christ told the Jewish people He would give them but ONE SIGN as proof positive He was indeed their long awaited Messiah. Think long and hard on the following:
“But I say unto you that every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment, for by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned” (See Matthew 12:36-37). Note well what Jesus has just said. He has said when someone makes a statement of any kind time will tell whether that person has been justified as having spoken truly or revealed to be a deceiver. After having made that statement, holy inspired scripture then says, “Then certain of the scribes and of the Pharisees answered (baiting Christ in the light of His plain, clear statement), saying, ‘Master, we would see a sign from thee (proving to them He was indeed the prophesied Messiah of Israel).’ But He answered and said unto them, ‘An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign (as He had already given them many such miracle signs that He was indeed come from God), and there shall no sign be given unto it, BUT THE SIGN OF THE PROPHET JONAH, FOR AS JONAH WAS THREE DAYS AND THREE NIGHTS IN THE WHALE’S BELLY SO SHALL THE SON OF MAN BE THREE DAYS AND THREE NIGHTS IN THE HEART OF THE EARTH.’” (See verses 38 through 40, Matthew 12).
Note well, and I guarantee you Satan made note of the Savior’s words that day, Jesus has just stated that the ONLY SIGN He was going to give the Jewish nation that He was indeed their Messiah was the fact that He would come back from the dead after three days and three nights – seventy-two hours! And did they remember what Jesus said would be the only sign He would give them that He was their Messiah? You better believe they remembered His exact words, for after His crucifixion they went to Pilate and said, “Sir, WE REMEMBER THAT DECEIVER SAID, WHILE HE WAS YET ALIVE, AFTER THREE DAYS I WILL RISE AGAIN!” (See Matthew 27:63). The sign was NOT merely that He would arise from the dead as several had come back from the dead, brought forth by Christ Himself, and they weren’t the Messiah. Many would come out of their tombs following His resurrection, and none of them were the Messiah. (See Matthew 27:52-53). No, the ONLY SIGN was HOW LONG HE WOULD REMAIN IN THE TOMB. He was telling them He would step forth from the tomb three days and three nights after being placed in the tomb. You can very well believe He, therefore, fulfilled that prediction to the letter! And here is where the Good Friday-Easter Sunday TRADITION goes down the drain where it belongs. Count forward from Good Friday sunset (Jesus was placed in the tomb as the sun was going down) till Easter Sunday morning. How many days and how many nights are there between Good Friday sunset and Easter Sunday morning? That’s right. You have Friday night and Saturday night. And you have the daylight part of Saturday. Now count again. Isn’t that one day and two nights???
Jewish rabbis can count to three. Ask them why they reject Jesus as their Messiah. Many of them will quote the passage from Matthew 12 to you. They will remind you that Jesus said His words concerning the only sign He would give them to prove He was their Messiah would either justify Him or condemn Him for making that claim. The rabbi will say, “That deceiver said He would be in the tomb for three days and three nights! You Christians freely admit, even teach as a glorious tradition of your faith that He was in the tomb only two days and one night, that He died and was placed in the tomb on Good Friday and came forth from the tomb at sunrise Easter Sunday morning. So keep Him as your Messiah. He plainly wasn’t ours!” And how do you answer the rabbi, Sunday observer. (After all that IS why you spurn God’s holy eternal Sabbath and call Sunday your Christian “holy” day – because you believe Jesus came out of the tomb on Sunday and thereby abolished the Sabbath and made that day holy. Isn’t that right?)
God have mercy on the preachers that have perpetuated a devil’s lie that causes God’s chosen people to have good cause to reject Him as their Messiah. “Woe be unto the pastors that destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture, saith the Lord. Therefore thus saith the Lord God of Israel against the pastors that feed my people; Ye have scattered my flock, and driven them away, and have not visited them (with the truth). Behold, I will visit upon you the evil of your doings, saith the Lord.” (Jeremiah 23:1-2). (Remember, I warned you that Satan is super-intelligent and a deceiver without equal in all of history and in all the universe. He took Solomon, the wisest man who ever lived, and wrapped him around his little finger. Or maybe you haven’t read the 11th chapter of I Kings either! He reached into Jesus Christ’s small pool of anointed apostles, leading Judas to betray the Lord and prompting Peter to deny three times in one night with ranting and cursing that He didn’t know Jesus Christ. And you think you are a match for him with your scant knowledge of scripture and spurning of the Hebrew scriptures, crowing, “I don’t get my doctrine out of the Old Testament”? God have mercy on you, preacher.)
If you really know your Bible, especially the Hebrew scriptures, you know that there were TWO Sabbaths crucifixion week – an ANNUAL Sabbath as well as the weekly Sabbath. And when scripture says they hastened to get our Lord’s body in the tomb as the Sabbath drew near, it wasn’t talking about the weekly Sabbath, Friday evening, but the ANNUAL Sabbath, which fell on Wednesday that week. So, indeed our Lord WAS in the tomb three full days and three full nights. He was in the tomb the dark part of Wednesday, the dark part of Thursday and the dark part of Friday as well as the daylight part of Thursday, the daylight part of Friday, and the daylight part of Saturday. As the sun began to set in the heavens Saturday evening, Jesus Christ came out of the tomb – exactly three days and three nights after He was placed in the tomb. So, as stated, the Good Friday Easter Sunday myth is exploded. Jesus is shown to be truthful, and the rabbis have no argument. (Read the entirety of Leviticus 23).
Easter Sunday observer, haven’t you ever noticed that it “was yet dark” when Mary Magdalene came to the tomb “the first day of the week” and found that Jesus was already GONE?!! (See John 20:1-2). And there goes your Easter Sunday sunrise service TRADITION! Of course He was already gone. He had arisen roughly twelve hours previously, at sunset Saturday, coming out of the tomb at the same time as He was placed in the tomb seventy-two hours before – at sunset, not sunrise!
And if my reader knows nothing about any annual Sabbaths, I would urge that reader to read Leviticus 23 as well as the four gospels slowly and carefully and prayerfully. Quit portraying Jesus Christ as a deceiver. Quit confusing the rabbis and giving them a valid argument to reject Jesus as their Messiah. And quit setting yourself up as a teacher of God’s Word if you don’t know what it says. I assure you my harsh words won’t begin to match the harsh words Jesus Christ will have for you when you face Him at the judgment and He demands that you give a full accounting for why you taught such gross error to unsuspecting men, women and children who looked at you as a teacher of divine truth.
Here’s another piece of very good advice since it comes from the apostle Paul’s pen: “We dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves, but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves are not wise” (See 2 Corinthians 10:12). When we feel certain we have the truth simply because all our honored and respected fellow preachers and ministers believe as we do, Paul says we are not wise. The argument, “All these people cannot be wrong” is an invalid argument. It is the argument used by the Pharisees. Remember, scripture WARNS us that Satan deceives THE WHOLE WORLD! (See Revelation 12:9). If he deceived wise king Solomon, then you better believe he has the capacity to deceive any theologian, evangelist, Greek scholar, seminary professor you care to name. Scripture says that Lucifer was “sum FULL OF WISDOM” and no scripture says or even implies Lucifer lost one whit of his intelligence. It merely became perverted and used against God and His kingdom. Read Revelation chapters 2 and 3 once more. Meditate long and hard on what Satan did to the early church. Read the tiny epistle of 3 John and see what Satan was able to accomplish with an apostle still on the scene. Reflect upon Paul’s telling Timothy “This thou knowest that ALL they which are in Asia be turned away from me…” You DO know how many of the churches to which Paul ministered and wrote were in the province of Asia Minor, don’t you? They ALL were captured by Satan! (See 2 Timothy 1:15). Some read Paul’s letters of exhortation and warning and believe they worked, that they were successful in turning things around and preventing apostasy. They weren’t.
Our fathers have inherited lies, my friend, falsehoods – deceptions that have been accepted as scripture truth. Satan is better at his game than most ministers realize. That’s why “Christianity” is comprised of dozens and dozens and dozens of bickering, dissenting, finger-pointing, differing denominations – many teaching the exact and total opposite of what another “church” across the street is teaching and believing to be divine truth. Yet ask any minister of any of these denominations if he, or she, has been called of God to preach the truth, well, I think you know the answer you will get. Ask them then are you preaching the truth? Do you really know and understand God’s Word? Again, I think you know what they will answer. How many of them do you think then are deceived? And Christ’s words echo down the corridor of time, “Many will say unto me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, didn’t we in thy name…………….”

I have lived long enough and interacted with a sufficient number of ministers, preachers, pastors to realize that few, if any, will be moved by the preceding words I have written and statements I have made. The Baptist preacher lives and dies a Baptist preacher. Likewise for the Methodist, the Lutheran, the Mennonite, the Presbyterian, etc., etc., etc. Preachers don’t change their beliefs, their doctrines, their teachings. You won’t hear the pastor preaching “once saved, always saved” in 1995 proclaiming from the pulpit in 2015, “You can most certainly lose your salvation, friend!” Nor will you hear the tongues-talking Pentecostal evangelist, who urged his audience to claim their heavenly language in 1986, condemning the practice in 2003. Jesus said if one will not listen to Moses and the prophets he, or she, wouldn’t be persuaded though one rose from the dead and said, “Now will you listen to me when I tell you to give careful attention to what God said through Moses and the prophets?”
The scary thing about spiritual deception is that when one embraces such deception they generally believe the same for the rest of their life. When one enters through that door of spiritual error it closes behind them and they rarely find the exit. Scarier yet, they don’t even look for it! PROOF of this truth is the fact just cited. A Nazarene preacher lives and dies a Nazarene preacher. A Church of Christ minister lives and dies a Church of Christ minister. A __________pastor lives and dies a________ pastor. (Fill in the blanks with any denomination you wish. I assure you, it will fit). When one denomination is teaching the exact opposite of another denomination another truth is quite evident: one of them is dead wrong, and maybe even both are in error! If my words have succeeded only in getting the reader to THINK, then I have succeeded marvelously well! My Lord gave me the capacity to think deeply long ago, to question and carefully re-examine all my inherited beliefs, simultaneously giving me the appetite of a starving giant regarding the Word of God whereby I read the Bible from cover to cover well over fifty times. My erroneous thinking and beliefs were gradually whittled away by the Word and I was finally able to fully “prove” all things of a spiritual nature. I now long to meet my Lord face to face and thank Him in person for His great mercy and gift of spiritual understanding.

The Hebrew Scriptures – God’s Gold Mine

I feel compelled by the Spirit to add a few more of the apostle’s comments regarding the supreme, overriding value of the Hebrew scriptures, commonly called the “Old Testament.”

Romans 15:3-6: “For even Christ did not please Himself; but as it is written (Paul now quotes from Psalm 69:9), ‘The reproaches of those who reproached You fell on Me.’ FOR WHATSOEVER THINGS WERE WRITTEN BEFORE (by the Hebrew prophets) WERE WRITTEN FOR OUR (the New Covenant church) LEARNING, THAT WE THROUGH THE PATIENCE AND COMFORT OF THE (HEBREW) SCRIPTURES MIGHT HAVE HOPE. Now may the God of patience and comfort grant you to be likeminded toward one another, according to Christ Jesus, that you may WITH ONE MIND AND ONE MOUTH glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
It is not possible for believers to be of “one mind” and of “one mouth” – that is, saying the same thing, teaching the same doctrines, etc., if some believers insist that they will use only the Greek scriptures (the “New” Testament) to formulate their doctrine and beliefs. Those so doing are divisive, walking disorderly and, concerning such believers, Paul writes: “Now I urge you, brethren, note those who cause divisions and offenses contrary to the doctrine which you have learned, AND AVOID THEM. For those who are such DO NOT SERVE OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, but their own belly (their own fleshly appetites), and by smooth words and flattering speech deceive the hearts of the simple” (Romans 16:17-18).
The “simple” meaning those who are ignorant of the Hebrew scriptures, the Old Testament. If one does not have a good, solid understanding of the Hebrew scriptures, he, in Paul’s language – not mine – is simple, easily deceived and led astray. He has no idea what God said through Jeremiah, Isaiah, Ezekiel, etc., concerning a given doctrine or teaching.

And note well how the apostle Paul closes his letter to the Romans: “Now to Him who is able to establish you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery kept secret since the world began but now is made manifest, AND BY THE SCRIPTURES OF THE PROPHETS, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, made known to all nations for the obedience of faith: to God only wise, be glory through Jesus Christ for ever. Amen” (See Romans 16:25-27).

Paul clearly says God in His wisdom chose the Hebrew prophets as His vehicle to make manifest our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ – not merely pre-recording the major events of Jesus’ life, e.g., his birth place, the time of his appearing, his sacrificial death, etc., but also the teachings and doctrines of Jesus Christ!

In his first letter to the Corinthian believers, Paul says that God’s workings with the fleshly Israelites were recorded to serve as examples for the New Covenant Church of God, “and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come…” (See I Corinthians 10:1-12). How can an assembly of believers be admonished and instructed by the Hebrew scriptures if they keep insisting, “That wasn’t written for us. We don’t get out doctrine from the Hebrew scriptures!”

The Sadducees did not believe in a resurrection, angels, or spirits (See Acts 23:8). How long did it take them to see the truth in these several areas after some of them became converted and members of the early church? Early Jewish converts thought circumcision and other Mosaic customs were still valid YEARS after the founding of the church. (See Acts 15:1-5). Likewise, today, in the true body of Christ, we have members who are embracing gross error unwittingly, confident they have and know the truth in some areas that are in actuality profound error!! They are truly converted – some of them. They really do possess God’s POWERFUL Holy Spirit – some of them, but they are blind to some basic scriptural truths. Remember, Jesus said, “When the Spirit is come He will guide you into ALL truth.” He also said, “Thy Word is truth.” So, if the Spirit is guiding one into all truth, that Spirit-led person will be guided into a hunger and a thirst for ALL THE WORD OF GOD – ALL THE TRUTH! Show me someone who has little interest in the Hebrew scriptures and I will show you someone who is NOT being guided or led by the Holy Spirit – else Jesus Christ didn’t know what He was talking about!

I beseech you, in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, THINK ON THESE THINGS!!!

Do You Have A Mental Block?

In order for someone steeped in an opposing viewpoint to really see God’s truth in a given matter, preconceived beliefs must be temporarily suspended as they will present a formidable mental block to one receiving the factualness of a different belief. Satan’s blinding POWER must also be considered in such matters.
Many fail to realize that God gives foundational truth in the Hebrew scriptures. If one is not well grounded in those scriptures and begins to formulate his doctrine from the Greek scriptures first or primarily, or, in some cases, entirely, then their coming to see the truth in a host of various doctrines is problematic. They probably will never see what God really has to say in His Word.
Also, the overriding idea that revered theologians of the present and past must indeed “have it together” concerning the doctrines they espouse and hold to be God’s truth, again erects another formidable mental block one must get around one way or another. The “Christian” Church has Thomas and Alexander Campbell, the Methodists have John and Charles Wesley, the Baptists have J.R. Graves, R.A. Torrey, Charles Haddon Spurgeon, etc. It never seems to dawn on the various pastors and preachers that they are leaning on the arm of flesh, looking to men to formulate their beliefs and religious practices. All of these men had a great deal of truth in what they taught and believed. Many were eloquent and convincing speakers. And, when you have believers who fail to really “prove” all things, error can creep in sideways and never be seen as error. (Some of these “great” theologians also embraced great error).
There is another formidable mental block to the truth entering the human mind – continued sin! Paul writes, “Sin not…neither give place to the devil.” (See Ephesians 4:26-27). All too many prospective preachers still live unsanctified lives, allowing sin into their lives – often daily – never realizing they are giving place to the devil to deceive them and prevent truth from entering their minds when they do so. They study the Greek scriptures first, or almost entirely, again preventing God’s truth from entering their minds and protect them from embracing error. God’s true prophet Daniel spoke of how he knew he and his fellow Israelites would have to turn from their iniquities in order to understand God’s truth. (See Daniel 9:13).
I make no apology for the function Jesus Christ has assigned me in the body of Christ. I AM a teacher of the Word in truth and faithfulness. And I urge you to consider what I say.
Christ’s Servant (Galatians 1:10),

Prove It – THEN Believe It

Most believers appear to pick up their beliefs like a dog running through a field of burrs – without any effort or deliberation. Then, too, like burrs, these beliefs just can’t be shaken off. They stick too deeply in the hide. The human mind is like a sponge in that it absorbs whatever is put into it. But, unlike a sponge, whatever is put into it cannot be easily squeezed out. Even scripture truth has a difficult, sometimes impossible, task pushing out error and being accepted as truth by the human mind that has long accepted and believed some doctrine or teaching that is actually contrary to the Word of God.
Then, too, believers, even pastors, have their theologians that they highly regard as bastions of truth. (If Doctor So-and-So believed and taught such and such a doctrine it must be true as he was such a holy living man and could quote scripture backwards and forwards). One denomination’s pastors forget that another denomination’s pastors have their favorite, highly revered theologians who taught and believed doctrines diametrically opposed to what their denomination accepts as Bible truth.

After you have come to believe what you do as the teaching of scripture, do something quite shocking PROVE what you believe by scripture fully answering every counter argument.  You will be in the extreme minority of believers if you do.

One Moment in Time

One Moment in Time

There is a popular song entitled “On Moment in Time,” and there is a line in that song that says something about being all that one can be at that one moment in time. Every time I hear that song I think of God’s will for my life, that there is one moment in time – a moment that may last for days, weeks or months, even longer maybe – wherein God will use me to the fullest, using my voice as well as my pen (or keypad). He will choose that moment, not I. He will open that door, not I. It might come next year, in my seventy-fifth year, or it might not arrive until my eightieth year, or later. I have no inkling of when it will arrive. I am confident of this, though: if I continue in my full submission to God’s Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, if I continue growing spiritually and in knowledge of the Word of God, there will come a moment in time when the Holy Spirit will move and I will become more fully and truly an instrument in God’s hands.
Having gone so deep into sin and having stayed there so long, having had so many false starts and falls, it is a miracle of the God of creation that I am yet alive, much less a teacher of His Word and a surrendered servant of Jesus Christ.
If I leave my hearers and readers with nothing else ringing in their ears, let me leave them with this utter truth: Do not limit God! He cannot be put into a box. He cannot be expected to act or react the way a human being might act or react under a certain set of stimuli. He cannot be second guessed, figured out, fully understood. He shows compassion and mercy upon whom He will show compassion and mercy. He will use an idolator to be His first High Priest. (Aaron made the golden calf idol, remember?) And he will use a rank terrorist to be His greatest apostle and most prolific writer of scripture. (Paul freely admits he wasted the church of God prior to his conversion, delivering up to death any professed Christians he found in the synagogues.)
Every time I look in a mirror I am surprised at my reflection, that I am really as old as I am, as I think and feel as though I am decades younger than my calendar seventy-four years. A forty or fifty year old man would have a difficult time keeping up with me at work. (I do janitorial work to supplement my meager social security pension and underwrite the cost of printing and mailing out my plethora of Bible study articles.) A teenager would need more sleep. “He restoreth my soul,” means, in essence, that He restores my life – giving me back decades wasted away in riotous living.
To me, my Creator is far more real than the computer screen I now gaze at as I type this mini-article. And He becomes more real with each passing day. I trust all who read this will soon come to realize His reality to the same degree and intensity.

A Word to the Pastors

Every minister would do well to take heed to the solemn words Jesus Christ spoke to His disciples shortly after His resurrection when He told them: “O fools, and slow of heart to believe ALL that the prophets have spoken” (See Luke 24:25). He spoke those words AFTER the cross! After whatever the cross had abolished, still Christ WARNED the very nucleus of the “New Testament” church, “You are FOOLS and hardheads, if you do not believe ALL that the prophets have spoken!!” Try reading Ezekiel or Isaiah with those words ringing in your ears. If more ”preachers” would do that, you would sure hear some different theology being broadcast from the pulpits across the land!
Many, if not most, “preachers” are solidly “locked in” to their particular belief system. They turn a deaf ear to any contrary message even though presented with a “thus saith the Lord” on the matter. I learned a long time ago that those who teach the scriptures are invariably the most narrow minded. The Lutheran minister will present his “Lutheran” doctrine, the Methodist will present his “Methodist” doctrine, etc., etc. On exceedingly rare occasions I encounter a pastor, preacher or Bible teacher who will pause and give serious thought and consideration to some scripture or scriptures presented to him that runs counter to his presently held belief. But this is, indeed, a rarity.
Few “Christian” congregations do things God’s way. Is that a startling statement? Almost unbelievable? God’s way in HIS church is: “Let the prophets (teachers of the Word) speak two or three, and let the other (the congregation and other teachers of the Word) judge (decide whether what is being presented is truly scriptural). If any thing be revealed (any scripture truth opened up) to another (teacher) that sitteth by (awaiting his turn to speak), let the first (speaker) hold his peace. (A preacher, teacher, etc. is not to adamantly stick to some prepared “sermon” when the Lord has given illumination to one of the other teachers). For ye (you anointed, learned teachers) may all prophesy (teach) one by one that all may learn, and all may be comforted. And the spirits of the prophets (teachers) are subject to the prophets. (A preacher is not to insist the “Holy Ghost” is upon him and he’s got to finish his message and shut out the other teachers!) For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in ALL churches of the saints (all assemblies where holy men and women of God gather to do things GOD’S WAY, to learn and be instructed).” (See I Corinthians 14:29-33).
Single pastor assemblies are foreign to the scriptures! God provided His faithful followers with a set of checks and balances, so that error from the pulpit would not go unchecked. every faithful congregation of God’s people is to have two, or three spokesmen! So says your bible. If error begins to be presented, one or more of the other elders can intervene and present scriptures that keep the congregation from being drawn into error. Just four verses later, Paul writes; “if any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord” (See verse 37 of I Corinthians 14).
Notice! Jesus Christ commanded that this is how congregations are to be led, fed and nurtured! Why do most congregations turn a deaf ear to such commandments of the Lord? They can’t argue it away, saying (wrongly, I might add), “Oh, that’s Old Testament teaching!” And, in the 40th verse of that chapter, Paul sums up, saying, “Let all things be done decently and in (God’s) order.”Things are done decently and in order when we do them God’s way.
Some might  argue, “Well most ‘Christian’ churches have traditionally had only one “preacher” for as long as I can remember.” They had better read what Jesus Christ said about doing things “traditionally” when that practice is contrary to God’s Word. “Then the Pharisees and scribes asked Him (Jesus Christ), ‘Why walk not thy disciples (Christ’s true followers) according to the tradition of the elders (the learned, popularly accepted religious leaders, the “ordained” ministers)?’….He answered and said unto them, ‘Well has Isaiah prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. Howbeit IN VAIN DO THEY WORSHIP ME, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.’” (see Mark 7:5-7).
Our heart is far from the Lord Jesus Christ when we don’t do things His way! Note well, Christ said it is possible to WORSHIP HIM, but to do so IN VAIN!!! I assure you, almost without exception every pastor, preacher, Bible teacher who reads those words know they are referring to someone else. We worship Jesus Christ in vain when we don’t worship Him according to HOW He commands us to worship Him. I don’t just believe many preachers will be greatly surprised at the judgment to come. I believe many will be in mind-numbing shock, dumbfounded, utterly perplexed, unable to comprehend why Jesus Christ is addressing them in such a stern fashion with such harsh words.
What I present herein is plain scripture truth. How can anyone read I Corinthians 14, verse 29 through 40 and fail to see what is PLAINLY said there? How can they honestly argue it doesn’t say what it so plainly says? Remember, when Christ sent forth His disciples to preach and to heal, He “sent them two and two (or two by two) before His face into every city and place…” (See Luke 10:1). Why? That is God’s way. “Two are better than one…For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falls (especially into spiritual error); for he has not another to help him up” (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10). The wisest of humans, Solomon, wrote those words. Should a pastor drift into error, or fail to comprehend the true meaning or teaching of a given text of scripture, a companion pastor can say, “Whoa, brother, consider these scriptures you have evidently overlooked!”
It is clear the early church had elders (plural) not single elder congregations. Notice how James writes: “Is any sick among you? Let him call for the ELDERS of the church (that individual congregation); and let THEM pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord…” (See James 5:14). Of course, the stubborn would argue that “the elders” in James 5:14 means the pastor and the deacons, but then what do they do with the plain, clear words of I Corinthians 14:29-40? What do they do with Luke 10:1 and Ecclesiastes 4:9-10? The same hardheads who want to argue James 5:14 is a reference to the pastor and the deacons of the congregation generally have little or no faith to pray and expect answers of miracle healing from God for those who are sick in the congregation. They don’t realize they are not getting answers because they are not doing things God’s way. They just think, “Well, the age of miracles has passed. God doesn’t work that way anymore. He has given us pricey, atheistic men and women of the world (called doctors, physicians, etc.) to heal us when we are sick.” ( I have worked with a lot of doctors in the past. Some are believers; Most are NOT). Why not at least try it God’s way one more time????

The Voice

Although the Lord might not have had control of my early years, He DOES have full and final control of my seventies and beyond should He be so gracious as to allow me to attain to great age as He has so blessed some members of my extended family. (I have an aunt who will celebrate her 100th birthday Saturday, April 8, 2017.  Her sister recently died at age 96!)

Although I live alone, I am never lonely as the Spirit of the Lord communes with me daily – almost on a continual basis. Several times a day I feel His promptings to turn off the television, or cease whatever pursuit I might be on at the time, and to listen to His voice. That voice comes to me through the Holy Scriptures. I ever have a Bible close at hand that I can open up and allow His Spirit to guide me to the passage or passages through which He desires to speak with me. Oftentimes what He gives me is for another, and I find myself sitting at the keypad of this computer typing the words that His Spirit pours into my mind.
No, I have never HEARD a voice other than the voices of fellow human beings. Nor have I ever been given a vision. Such communication I believe is reserved for God’s prophets. I do believe such exists, though. Occasionally He speaks to me through a dream, but most always, I would say 99% of the time, He speaks to me through His Word, and when I hear that “voice” it is as clear as a bell and unmistakably the voice of the Lord. Generally, He does this by bringing to my mind a passage of scripture, and then another, and another, and another, tying them together in such a way that full and complete understanding comes just as though all of the passages of scripture to which I have turned were joined together in one great paragraph!

As scripture so clearly affirms, our Lord is “a revealer of secrets.” “He reveals the deep and secret things: He knows what is in the darkness, and the light dwells with Him.” This is the God Daniel knew, and this is the God I have thankfully come to know. (See Daniel 2:22, 28-29 and 47).
This God of glory declares: “I change not!” He is, indeed, the same yesterday, today and forever! And He declares, “You will seek me and you will find me when you search for me with all your heart.” But the sad truth is that few do so. They might give Him lip service and sometimes turn a thought or two toward God and His counsel from time to time and, therefore, find Him quite distant, quite intangible, a mysterious being that seems to have little if any real interaction with His creation. Yet He cries out, “Behold me, behold me,” to those whom He has chosen. (See Malachi 3:6; Hebrews 13:8; Jeremiah 29:13; Isaiah 65:1)

I suppose the greatest phenomenon I experience in my relationship with our Lord is the Holy Spirit awakening me from time to time in order to share scripture truth with my mind or to prompt me to arise and go to the computer keypad and write an article sharing some scripture truth or revelation with others. This almost always occurs at 3:00 a.m. It will sometimes occur several mornings in a row – usually at 3:00 a.m. – or it might not occur but one morning a week, one morning a month, or sometimes weeks or months will elapse before I will be awakened again. Suddenly I will awaken from the deepest slumber. At that moment I will be wide awake, no yawning, no blinking or haziness of thought. I keep a small flashlight by my bed and I will reach for the same and shine its beam upon the wall clock a few feet from my bed. The minute hand will invariably be exactly below the twelve, or nearly so, and the hour hand will be pointed at the three. At that same instant scriptures will begin flooding my mind and it is as though someone were preaching inside my head. I always instantly arise and either go and sit in my arm chair in the living room and open one of my Bibles, or go to my computer keypad, poised and ready to type whatever sentences begin flooding my mind.

My function in the body of Christ is that of a teacher – teaching the Word of God to others. Most of my teaching has been done through typewritten articles.   Many of these articles are sent forth via computer emails. Others are sent forth via the U.S. Mail after I have typed them using my computer and then printing them with my printer.  Now that I have my own website (www.thebiblicalprophets.com) I have posted my articles on that website. Most of my tithe to the Lord is given in this manner, to-wit, printer’s ink, printing paper, envelopes, first-class stamps, etc. I also give to the needy as the Spirit directs. My tithe is generated from a very small social security pension and money I earn working part-time performing janitorial work for local businesses

As I reflect upon the past decades, I am deeply grateful that the Lord extended my life long enough for me to bow fully at His feet and thus be able to say, “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.” I have finally learned that truly there is no joy like the joy of full obedience – obedience to the Lord and His divine Word. In other decades my obedience was sporadic and short lived. I had yet to learn the necessity of full, complete, uninterrupted surrender. We cheat both ourselves and God when we seek to offer Him only partial obedience or surrender. We also leave the door wide open for the enemy to move and lead us astray or to curse our lives in one fashion or another.

The feedback I receive from time to time gives me hope that these final years of my life are not being lived in vain and that there is a grand purpose to my continued existence in the flesh. If my reader is blessed even in the smallest fashion, then I am immensely blessed and greatly rewarded.

Points To Ponder

Most people accept carelessly what they are taught from childhood. And, coming into maturity, they accept that which they have repeatedly heard, read or been taught. Mormon boys and girls make good Mormon teenagers, who, in turn, make excellent Mormon parents. Of course, you can insert “Baptist,” “Methodist,” “Lutheran,” “Roman Catholic,” etc., actually any denominational stripe or color you wish. The overwhelming majority of humanity continue to go along with their peers, or whatever religious authority figures they may have in their realm of existence, usually without question. Humans have a rather curious habit of ASSUMING we are right in whatever we have come to believe, especially if most every human we come into close contact with believe as we do. And many, if not most, will vigorously and often emotionally defend their religious convictions.
A student in Germany studying world history is instructed in one version of World War I and II, but a history student in America or Russia is taught a somewhat different version. And sometimes that difference can be staggering! Likewise with seminary or Bible college students. A Baptist college student is taught a whole set of different doctrines than is taught at the nearby Pentecostal college or Roman Catholic seminary.
It is far more difficult to Unlearn an erroneous supposed truth than it is to learn a new truth. Of course, what may be a “new” truth to one is an ages old truth to others. The Baptist KNOWS that he has plenty of scripture to back him up on his “once saved, always saved” doctrine. Likewise, the Presbyterian KNOWS he has plenty of scripture supporting his stand on election and predestination. The Pentecostal preacher has no doubt he sees and understands the truth regarding the baptism of the Holy Ghost with “tongues” as a sign thereof.
Why, in general, are people in Thailand Buddhist; those in Italy, France and Spain Catholic; those in the Arab world Islamic? Primarily, of course, because they and those around them grew up being taught, and automatically accepting, those faiths. To expect one of them to discover the truth (hidden from them and also contrary to the teachings of childhood and adulthood that engulfed them) would seem to be expecting the impossible. Why do most people believe the things they believe? Few, indeed, ever stop to ask themselves in retrospect how they came to accept the beliefs that have found lodgment in their minds.
Besides being Creator of all that exists, and Ruler over that creation, God is also mankind’s Educator, who reveals knowledge beyond and outside the scope of human ability to discover and know on its own. But, in order to attain that knowledge and to come to know the truth in spiritual matters, one MUST be teachable. The Baptist, the Episcopalian, and the Mennonite, as well as any other “religious” personality must come to grips with the FACT that, being human, they can embrace error while fervently believing they have and know the truth in any given area. Pride must give way to humility before error can give way to truth. And disobedience must give way to obedience “that we might turn from our iniquities, and understand Thy (God’s) truth” (See Daniel 9:13). I urge you to think on these things deeply.

God’s Great Plan of the Ages Excerpt

This is but an excerpt from a much larger article I wrote a few years ago regarding God’s Great Plan of the Ages. Over the past two or three decades I have written many articles on this subject. I learned long ago that it is one of the most MISunderstood subjects regarding God and His work. Those who present themselves to others as teachers of God’s eternal truth need to fully understand that truth. To teach spiritual error can be quite costly.

Never forget that God is super intelligent, abundant in mercy, utterly fair, not willing that any should perish and God IS love. I assure you, ten thousand Einsteins sitting in round table discussion for ten thousand years could not come up with a better plan of salvation than God devised in a moment of time, a plan that affords any and all born human an excellent opportunity to come into a right relationship with God and inherit eternal life. I further assure you that NO ONE will ever have just cause to say to God, “You never gave me a fair shot at entering into a vital, life-changing relationship with You. I never had a real chance to be saved and granted immortality!”

Most “preachers” merely parrot what they have learned in seminary, Bible college, or what they have gleaned and gained from attending church services or Sunday school. That is why Baptist youths become Baptist preachers, Presbyterian ministers hail from a Presbyterian home, Pentecostal evangelists had Pentecostal parents. Few such ever really and truly “prove all things” of a spiritual nature. They assume they are correct in what they believe. They take it for granted that they are saying what God’s Word says regarding that which they believe and hold to be true.

Would it make sense to you to purchase a new car for your son as his graduation gift, then park the car in a garage on the other side of the country and never tell your son you bought him such a wonderful gift?  Yet that is exactly the mindset many preachers have regarding the gift of salvation. Jesus purchased the same for every man, tasting death for every man, yet allows BILLIONS AND BILLIONS of lost human beings to live and die without ever once telling them of such a gift!!! It doesn’t make sense, does it? Yet, I assure you, God’s truth makes perfect sense. God is the most rational, fair-minded entity in the universe.

If you will remain open-minded God will bless you beyond measure. I trust you are such a believer

Teachers Are A Dime A Dozen

I have often said that if the ability to have and maintain an open mind could be assigned a value on the world’s financial markets it would have a value greater than that of any precious metal or gem stone as that is how rare it is, and rarity of something increases its value exponentially.

When the Lord anoints someone to teach the Word He instills in that teacher the appetite of a starving giant. That teacher of the Word cannot get enough of the Word in his mind and memory bank. This is a must as the Lord has chosen to use that human mind as a vessel to store His Word, His truths, His doctrines. That teacher must know the Word of God intimately well as He will be used to instruct the elect of God. Satan, of course, has his counterfeit teachers of the Word, men and women, however well-meaning, who have set themselves up as teachers of God’s Word, understanding neither what they say or affirm so confidently. The apostles speak of such in several of their epistles.

“But now has God set the members every one of them (no exceptions) in the body (of Christ), as it has pleased Him” (I Corinthians 12:18). Tragically many set themselves in various positions and offices in countless and sundry assemblies of professing Christians. They assume roles never appointed them by God. They are then wide open to Satan’s deceptions. Thinking they are serving the true body of Christ, they scatter the sheep and do irreparable harm to God’s work. Most are quite sincere and mean well, I trust, but, however unwittingly, they sow the seeds of confusion far and wide. This goes a long way in explaining why there are so many differing and contradictory denominations in the Christian religion.

“God has tempered the body together.” (See I Corinthians 12:24). And God does all things well. One who has been anointed and called to perform the role of a teacher in the body of Christ is not only gifted with the ability to teach, that one is also instilled with a hunger for the knowledge of God’s Word that is akin to the hunger of a starving giant. That one so ordained cannot get enough of God’s Word into their mind and memory, reading the Bible from cover to cover again and again and again literally dozens and dozens of times. And, as they read God’s Word, God illuminates their mind, giving them an uncanny understanding of what that Word teaches and actually says on all points of doctrine. Though never becoming infallible, still their comprehension of God’s Word is absolutely uncanny. In every other way they may be as common as the clerk at the local Speedway Service Station. In fact, they might even be that clerk for God resists the proud and gives grace to the humble.

Again, in the 28th verse of I Corinthians 12, Paul affirms that it is God alone who sets His anointed teachers in the body of Christ. Regrettably, many seek to perform a role to which God has never called them. They then become like the church soloist who cannot carry a tune or the organist who does not know the difference between a C-Chord and a G-Chord. They give forth a discordant and confusing sound.
